this is going a little too far in some respects, look at the “pokes”….

I think the Fightin’ Whities (http://www.robotwisdom.com/issues/whities.html) actually ARE a good mascot though, and it’s kinda disappointing that nobody’s stepped up with a corresponding female mascot like the Housekeepin’ Betties or High-Heeled Suzies, along with a period character mascot.

    Minnesota Vikings?
    Dallas Cowboys?
    Texas Rangers?
    Houston Texans?

    The 49ers, Bucaneers, Saints?

    Why are these not insulting?

And what about the Apache open source software project http://apache.org/? Originally it was called that after “a patchy” web server.

I’m willing to accept that you find it insulting, but you’ll have to explain to me why that’s insulting and other mascots and names are not.

I think it’s interesting how this has suddenly become a great issue within the past few years. Why now? I definitely do see how it can be degrading towards some individuals, and how some individuals may not understand why.

Yes there are other mascots that people question whether or not they’re insulting, to be honest there is always going to be something to debate over on this issue. I mean my mascot was the “Antlers,” Elkhorn Antlers. Why antlers? See, there is always something to argue about.

I think everyone should respect the wishes of native americans if this is an issue for them, and not argue against them because what do we know about them and how something should make them feel? So we shouldn’t argue against what they feel is right or wrong when we don’t even have the slightest clue.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with these mascots, and frankly I wouldn’t mind if they made teams that represented other races of people.

This is very true there should be more TM logo of different races. Since there are TM logos of Indians or they should just get rid of them all.

I’m in Native American Studies Tuesday and Thursday at 11:30 am. (1100-009) Um I think in the beginning that the mascots were used to honor Indians. Now I don’t believe they honor nor do I think they disrespect them.

This isn’t a new issue, really; it even made an appearance in a Mighty Ducks movie if I’m not mistaken.

i used to think mascots did honor indians, but i’m gaining a different perspective on the issue. 1:00 class

I don’t think any disrespect was meant initially. Some mascots are pranks (e.g. the Benson Bunnies) and others were just trying for a new idea. It really shouldn’t be that big of a deal for the schools to change.

I didn’t really get why there is an argument about mascots, but after listening in class, I can see why some Native Americans would be upset.

I find this a very interesting topic and can see why native americans could find this upsetting.

I never really thought about this subject. I see now, after being told some of the history of the towns, that Indian mascots can be disrespectful. I think it is an issue but not to the point where federal funds should be stopped.

  15. Josh Saltz on September 2nd, 2008 1:21 pm

Honestly I had never thought about the issue. But now that I have thought about it, I see where you are coming from.

I think that indian mascots are harmless. I really dont think that is that big of a deal. It seems to be blown out of proportion. Im In Native Studies t-th 11:30

If Navtive Americans find these mascots disrespectful, then we should respect their opinions and not use them. And who ever started using Indians as mascots most likely didn’t understand the culture completely, so why did they do it????

  20. Jess Anderson on September 4th, 2008 8:07 am

I agree some are offensive, but schools shouldn’t lose fed. funding due to their mascot.

  21. Caitlin Luke on September 4th, 2008 9:27 am

    NAMS TR 11:30-12:45

The mascots are a bit disrespectful, but I don’t think they were meant to be. I also think that unless a severe action is taken, teams won’t willingly change their mascots.

  22. Miles Matthias on September 4th, 2008 10:43 am

This is a cool idea. Promotes some thinking.

Interesting survey, I do not necessarily agree with the choices allowed by each question. I answered as honestly as I can given my choice selections.

I was completely oblivious to this before my native american class. now i see how these things are offensive.

I am just glad that someone did these playoffs and are finally honoring all the other groups of people.

    Good Morning,

I didn’t realize that there were so many sports teams as well as companies that had “Idians” as mascots that are supposed to represent thier pride, school spirit. It never occured to me until i realized that it did not honor the tribes, and they do perpetuate sterotypes as well as racism, it is a mockery of the people.
