Dartmouth College has never adopted an “official” nickname and mascot. Initially, Dartmouth College was referred to as the “Big Green.” Sometime in the 1920’s, the College morphed into the “Indians.” The Indians lasted until 1974, when the trustees disavowed any reference to the unofficial “Indians” mascot. The Dartmouth Review has led the call for a return to the “Indians” nickname and mascot. Since 1974, Dartmouth has returned to the unofficial “Big Green” nickname with “Keggy the Keg” as the unofficial mascot. Dartmouth, now is the time to officially make up your mind. The problem for those yearning for a return to the good ol’ days of the “Indians” mascot is that you will run afoul with the NCAA if you officially adopt the old “Indians” mascot. Ask the University of North Dakota how much it costs to defend your Indian mascot!!!
Honor Indians Institute, (specifically Ruben Zendejas, see “about the artist”) has developed a couple of alternatives to the “Indians” mascot. Today, we offer an updated version of “The Big Green.”

Tomorrow, we will offer a twist on the “Indians” nickname and mascot that may keep you out of reach of the NCAA. You can decide what works best for Dartmouth College.
